According to a new study, underage drinkers between the ages of 18 and 20 see more magazine advertising than any other age group for the alcohol brands they consume most heavily, raising important questions about whether current alcohol self-regulatory codes concerning advertising are sufficiently protecting young people.
The study, from the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, examined which age groups saw the most magazine advertising for the 25 alcohol brands most popular among underage boys and girls, in contrast with 308 alcohol brands less popular with underage drinkers. Published in the July issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, it is believed to be the first paper to examine whether youth exposure to magazine alcohol advertising is higher for the brands they frequently consume.
When the Link Together Coalition learned that 49 percent of teens in Wheeling Township, Ill., said that they would never get caught by their parents if they went to a party where alcohol was served, they knew they had their work cut out for them.
“We recognize that most parents in Wheeling don’t provide alcohol, but we recognize that it does happen,” explained Jori Ouimet, prevention specialist of the coalition that serves five cities in the township just outside of Chicago. “We wanted to raise awareness about the dangers of providing alcohol to minors in the community. We also wanted to incorporate other messages, like how parents should set clear rules in the home about not using substances and communicating with their kids about it.” (more…)
